A rigorous, human-centred methodology rooted in African wisdom and international best practice
"Every person carries within them the seeds of extraordinary potential. Our role is not to plant those seeds — they are already there. Our role is to tend the soil, clear the weeds, and create the conditions in which they cannot help but grow."
The Arise Consulting Uganda Founding Principle
We approach every engagement with deep humility, fierce curiosity, and an unwavering belief in the capacity of African professionals and organisations to achieve world-class excellence on their own terms.
Each phase is designed to build naturally on the last, creating a cohesive journey from awareness to sustained transformation.
Every successful coaching journey begins with honest, courageous inquiry. In the Discovery & Assessment phase, we create a safe, structured space for deep self-exploration and organisational listening. Using validated diagnostic tools — including psychometric assessments, strengths inventories, 360-degree feedback surveys, and appreciative interviews — we build a rich, multi-dimensional picture of where our client currently stands.
This phase is not simply about identifying deficits. It is equally about surfacing strengths, patterns of excellence, and the underutilised resources that already exist within the person or team. We listen beneath the surface to understand the systemic, cultural, and relational dynamics that shape performance.
With a clear picture of the current reality established, we move into intentional, collaborative goal setting. This phase is where possibility meets practicality. Together with our client, we co-design a coaching plan that is ambitious enough to inspire and grounded enough to be achievable within a realistic timeframe.
Goals are set using a blend of the GROW Model and Appreciative Inquiry principles — honouring what has worked well in the past while stretching toward a compelling vision of the future. Each goal is specific, measurable, and tied to clear milestones so that progress is visible and celebrated along the way.
This is where the real work happens — and where transformation becomes visible. The Active Coaching & Implementation phase is the heart of every engagement. Through a carefully sequenced series of coaching conversations, workshops, skill-practice sessions, and real-world challenges, our clients move from insight to action to embedded habit.
Our coaches are skilled at holding a creative tension between support and challenge — knowing when to affirm, when to provoke, when to sit in silence, and when to push. We draw on a diverse toolkit of coaching methodologies, including GROW, Action Learning Sets, Narrative Coaching, and Embodied Leadership practices, always calibrated to the individual or team we are working with.
Transformation that sticks requires intentional consolidation. The Review & Continuous Growth phase is designed to ensure that the gains made during the coaching engagement become deeply embedded — not dependent on the ongoing presence of the coach, but truly internalised and self-sustaining.
We conduct a thorough end-of-engagement review that measures progress against the original goals, celebrates growth, and candidly addresses areas for continued development. Clients leave this phase with a clear, practical Ongoing Development Plan that serves as their roadmap long after our formal relationship concludes. Many choose to continue with periodic check-in sessions to sustain momentum.
We draw on internationally validated frameworks, always adapted for the African professional context.
Goal · Reality · Options · Way Forward
The GROW Model is one of the world's most widely used coaching frameworks, developed by Sir John Whitmore and refined over decades of practice. It provides a clear, structured pathway through any coaching conversation — moving from defining the goal, honestly assessing current reality, generating a range of options, and committing to a clear way forward. At Arise, we use GROW as a flexible backbone, not a rigid script, allowing the conversation to breathe and respond to what emerges in the moment.
Discover · Dream · Design · Destiny
Appreciative Inquiry (AI), developed by David Cooperrider, is a strength-based approach to change that intentionally focuses on what is working, what is life-giving, and what is possible — rather than beginning with problems and deficits. The 4-D cycle of Discover, Dream, Design, and Destiny is particularly powerful in African organisational contexts, where collective narrative and positive vision are deeply culturally resonant. We use AI extensively in our team coaching, leadership development, and organisational change work.
Questions · Reflection · Action · Learning
Action Learning, pioneered by Reg Revans and further developed by Michael Marquardt, is a process in which a small, diverse group of professionals work together on real, complex challenges — using structured questioning, deep listening, and cycles of action and reflection to generate both solutions and individual learning. Action Learning Sets are a cornerstone of our leadership development and corporate coaching programmes. They harness the collective intelligence of the group while building the coaching skills of every participant.

At Arise Consulting Uganda, we are committed to evidence-based practice. Every methodology we employ has a rigorous foundation in peer-reviewed research in coaching psychology, organisational behaviour, and adult learning theory. We do not follow trends — we follow evidence.
At the same time, we are acutely aware that much of the global coaching research has been conducted in Western, educated, industrialised, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) contexts. We take that research seriously, and we interrogate it critically through an African lens. Where universal principles apply, we apply them. Where they need to be contextualised, nuanced, or reimagined for the Ugandan and East African professional landscape, we do exactly that.
Our practitioners are active participants in the global coaching research community, contributing to and drawing from the latest thinking in fields including positive psychology, neuroscience of learning, intercultural competence, and servant leadership.
We build on Seligman's PERMA model and Csikszentmihalyi's flow research to maximise thriving, not just functioning.
"I am because we are." Our coaching integrates the African philosophy of relational personhood, community accountability, and collective flourishing alongside individual growth.
Drawing on neuroplasticity research, we design learning experiences that encode new patterns at the neural level — making change sustainable rather than superficial.
We invest heavily in understanding the specific economic, cultural, political, and social context in which our clients live and lead — because context is not incidental to coaching; it is central.
